Technical presentation: invited lectures by eminent professionals in the field of Metallurgical & Materials Engineering

The technical talk organized by IIM Jamshedpur Chapter proved to be a significant platform for knowledge sharing and networking, reinforcing the importance of continuous learning and collaboration in the metallurgical industry.

Following lectures were organized

  1. Professor Satishchandra Ogale (Director, Research Institute for Sustainable Energy (RISE), TCG Centres for Research and Education in Science and Technology (TCG-CREST), Kolkata, & Emeritus Professor, Department of Physics and Centre for Energy Science, IISER, Pune): 29th June 2023; Topic: ‘Emergent Battery Chemistries and Materials: The Emergent Scenario and Future Challenges’.
  2. Mr Shiva Rama Rao (IT Consultant for Digitalisation of Manufacturing Industry, ISO-9001 & 45001 Auditor with IRQS): 6th July 2023; Topic: ‘Implementation of Industry 4.0 in Steel Industry’.
  1. T. Bhaskar (Chief Technology Officer, Tata Steel Long Products Limited, and one of the executive committee members of the IIM Jamshedpur Chapter): 18th September, 2023; Topic: My Engineering journey !  ‘Tryst with Events , People , Places , Institutions and Organisations that defined me’

Delivered by : Prof. Dr.- Ing. Wolfgang Bleck, Chair of Ferrous Metallurgy, RWTH Aachen University, Germany & Prof. Dr. .- Ing. Dierk Raabe, Director, Max Planck Institute for Iron Research, Düsseldorf and professor, RWTH Aachen University, Germany

The Indian Institute of Metals (IIM), Jamshedpur chapter, hosted prestigious technical talks at Beldih Club, Bistupur, featuring international experts Prof. Wolfgang Bleck, Chair of Ferrous Metallurgy, RWTH Aachen University, Germany and Prof. Dierk Raabe, Director, Max Planck Institute for Iron Research, Düsseldorf, Germany. The event was graced by the presence of Dr. Debashish Bhattacharjee, Vice President, Technology and R&D, Tata Steel, Dr. Sandip GhoshChawdhury, Director, CSIR-NML, Dr. Hans Fisher Ex-CEO and MD Tata Steel Europe, Dr. Soumitra Tarafder, Former Adviser Management and Chief Scientist, CSIR-NML, Dr. A. N. Bhagat, Immediate Past Chairperson of IIM Jsr Chapter and many metallurgical experts from CSIR-NML, Tata Steel and NIT Jamshedpur.

Prof. Ashok Kumar, Chairperson, IIM Jamshedpur Chapter delivered the welcome address and highlighted the chapter’s objectives and activities. Prof. Bleck, in his lecture, shared his vast experience on the steel research by highlighting the future requirements of steel in various sectors including mobility, energy and infrastructure. He also raised concern regarding the contribution of steel industries to total global CO2 emission.  Prof. Raabe’s lecture was equally engaging, delving into insightful aspects of sustainability in materials science. Both the experts emphasized that there is many more needs to be done with respect to steel research and developing new materials keeping in view the stringent regulation on environmental emissions, global warming, and requirements of renewable energy to replace fossil fuel to produce steel and new materials for future requirements.

The event witnessed a remarkable gathering of more than 100 professionals from CSIR-NML, Tata Steel, faculties and students from NIT Jamshedpur and other enthusiasts from the metallurgical industry. At the end of the each talk, a brief question and answer session saw enthusiastic participation from the audience.

Dr. Gopi Kishore Mandal, Secretary, IIM Jamshedpur Chapter concluded the programme with vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to Prof. Bleck and Prof. Raabe for sharing their expertise. Special thanks were extended to Dr. Debashish Bhattacharjee , Dr. Sandip GhoshChawdhury, Dr. Chiradeep Ghosh, Prof. Ashok Kumar, Dr. Biraj Kr Sahoo for their support in organizing the event. Dr. Mandal also thanked all participants and attendees for their enthusiastic participation. The event concluded with a group photo session, followed by high tea for all attendees to network and interact.
