The 12th Prof. S. N. Sinha Memorial Materials & Metallurgy Quiz (SNSM3Q-2024) organized by the Indian Institute of Metals (IIM), Jamshedpur Chapter, at CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory, Jamshedpur, on August 09, 2024.
The Indian Institute of Metals (IIM), Jamshedpur Chapter, successfully hosted the 12th edition of the “Professor S. N. Sinha Memorial Materials and Metallurgy Quiz-2024 (SNSM3Q-2024)” for students in grades XI and XII. The event took place in the auditorium of CSIR-NML at Burmamines and saw participation from 17 schools, with a total of 68 students and 15 teachers. Esteemed guests from CSIR-NML, Tata Steel, and NIT-Jamshedpur were also in attendance. Mr.Chaitanya Bhanu, Vice President-Operations, TATA Steel ltd served as the Chief Guest and officially inaugurated the event.
The quiz is held in honor of the late Prof. S. N. Sinha, a distinguished educator and former president of the IIM Jamshedpur Chapter. The program commenced with a floral tribute to Prof. Sinha by Mr.Chaitanya Bhanu, Dr. Sandip Ghosh Chowdhury, Director CSIR-NML, Prof. Ashok Kumar (Chairman of the IIM Jamshedpur Chapter), Prof. (Mrs.) Gayatri Sinha (wife of the late Prof. Sinha), and Dr. Chiradeep Ghosh (Vice-chairman of the IIM Jamshedpur Chapter).
The competition began with a written screening round, followed by a final stage round. Out of 34 teams, five qualified for the finals, representing Narbheram Hansraj English school , Jusco School Kadma, Rajendra Vidyalaya and DBMS School. After a series of engaging rounds, including multiple choice, hint, picture, video, dumb charades, and jeopardy round. Saksham V Jha and Harsh Aryan of Narbheram Hansraj English school Jamshedpur emerged as champions. Abhinav Kumar Pathak and Shashwat Bhushan of Jusco School Kadma emerged as Runner-Up1. Aditya Pandey and Shaurya Gupta of Rajendra Vidyalaya got Runner-Up2.
The first three teams participated in the National level Prof. Brahm Prakash Memorial Quiz competition, which was held at the Indira Gandhi Center for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam on September 21-22, 2024. This programme was initiated as an effort to create awareness among the students about the role of materials science and metallurgy in industrial and technological developments. In the year 1993, this event was named after Prof. Brahm Prakash, an eminent metallurgist of India.
Dr. Sandip Ghosh Chowdhury, Director CSIR-NML welcomed the gathering. Dr. Sandip Ghosh spoke about the evolution of human civilization identified with different metal ages like Copper, Iron, Bronze and modern times with lithium age. He highlighted the electrification of the society needs critical materials in abundance and need for the control of human greed in utilizing natural resources for sustainability. Prof. Ashok Kumar, Chairman IIM Jamshedpur chapter briefed about various events and initiatives of IIM chapter. While delivering the inaugural address, Chief Guest Mr.Chaitanya Bhanu said,” Prof. Sinha had a great role in building the student fraternity in metallurgy as Head of Metallurgy department of NIT Jamshedpur, and Dean / Principal, NIT as well as Director, NIFFT Ranchi. He was a teacher of eminence and would be remembered by everyone who came in his contact”. He also spoke about importance of engineering materials in critical fields like energy, space, defence. He quoted all the scientific developments like semiconductor, magnets, space launch, cryogenic engine are related to development of advanced alloys. He explains the need of materials for extreme conditions for nations development and appeal the school students to pursue career in Material science and metallurgy.”. Dr .Chiradeep Ghosh, Vice-chairman proposed the vote of thanks acknowledging the unrelenting support of entire organizing team and enthusiastic participation of school students.
