The Indian Institute of Metals, Jamshedpur Chapter in association with Tata Steel Ltd., CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory, Jamshedpur and National Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur, organised the International Conference on Corrosion and Coatings (i3C) during February 6-7, 2025 in Hotel Vivanta, Jamshedpur.

The Conference was inaugurated by the Chief Guest, Dr Sandip Ghosh Chowdhury, Director, CSIR-NML; Guest of Honour, Mr A K Manohar, Executive Director National Thermal Power Corporation Ltd. (NTPC); Dr Ashok Kumar, Chairman, IIM Jamshedpur Chapter & Head, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering; Dr. Raghuvir Singh, Chairman, i3C-2025; Dr. Tapan Rout, Convenor, i3C-2025 alongwith the other important dignitaries Mr. Sudhanshu Pathak, Ex-Vice President, Steel Manufacturing, Tata Steel Limited; Dr Ramanuj Narayan, Director, CSIR-IMMT, Mr. Praveen Thampi, Chief CRM TSK, Cold Rolling Mill. Mr Atul Srivastav, Vice president, Wulspun Group, Dr A N Bhagat, Dr S. Tarafdar to formally inaugurate the conference with the release of Souvenir.

Dr Raghuvir Singh, Chairman, i3C-2025 welcomed the delegates and highlighted on the two days technical programme of the conference. This conference is also features four plenary lectures and 15 keynotes lectures and 40 contributory lectures. We have more than 15 postures along with technical stalls have been shown to all delegates and participants for the exposure.

Dr Ashok Kumar, Chairman, IIM Jamshedpur Chapter briefed about the IIM overview and its activities throughout the year. He has emphasized, how IIM Jamshedpur is playing an important role in organizing this type prestigious conference in the need of hours.

Chief Guest, Dr. Sandip Ghosh Chowdhury, Director, CSIR-NML highlighted about the corrosion is a silent enemies and because of corroison we lose more than 2-3% of GDP every year. This is the time all scientist, engineers and technologists to work in a team to combat against corrosion. Steel is playing an important role to take our nation forward however protection of corrosion to steel structure needs immediate attention.

Guest of Honour Mr A K Manohor, Executive Director NTPC, New Delhi gave a thoughtful address over corrosion and how corrosion is ruining the entire structure of the power plants which require protective coatings solution from scientist of this Nations. We also work in collaborations with scientist and engineers and academicians though various focused consortium.

Dr Tapan Kumar Rout, Principal Scientist, Surface Engineering Research Group, R&D, Tata Steel Limited and Convenor, i3C 2025  gave the thanking note to all Guests, sponsorers and speakers, participants and attendees. Dr. Rout gave thanks to all dignitaries of Tata Steel, NML and NIT. Dr Rout, Convener  stressed upon the point is that this conference is found to be different conference where ideas and new technologies will be discussed for two days compared to the conference being organised in similar areas elsewhere.

More than 100 delegates and speakers from 34 reputed institutes from different parts of county and aboard (hybrid mode) participated in the conference. Few of them from IIT Kharagpur, IIT Kanpur, ISc, Bangalore, IICT, Hyderabad,  Jindal Steel & Power, RMIT University, Australia, IZA-Netherlands, COMSOL-Switzerland, Materials Design, USA.  In addition to our sponsors like Tata Steel, Electrotherm, Growel, Nippon Parkerising, Quaker, Henkel, COMSOL, GTZ, Shimadzu, FLOWCHAR, Greemovoc, BiomatiQ, PROQUEST, SCHRONDINGER, Waters, PARAT, MONOPOL, Tata BlueScope, IRTECH, EXPOSOME, Labguard, Universal Paints be the part of this conference as the key sponsors.

The conference focus on advances in Coatings and high temperature corrosion in oil & gas, chemical, nuclear & thermal power plants, construction, and mobility industries. Corrosion monitoring, auditing, failure analysis and prevention along with modelling and prediction. This is an unique platform for all researchers, engineers, academia and industry experts to discuss over challenges and solutions about corrosion & coating.

The second day of the I3C-2025 conference was a resounding success, bringing together industry experts, research scholars, and professionals from across the globe to engage in dynamic discussions and exchanges in the area of corrosion and advanced coatings. The morning session of the conference featured a series of impactful plenary, keynote, technical talks, and parallel poster sessions, with speakers from both national and international levels. Keynote speakers shared valuable insights on emerging topics in corrosion monitoring, auditing, predictive modelling and coatings.  The parallel poster sessions allowed participants to engage directly with researchers, exchanging ideas and exploring potential collaborations.

One of the most anticipated segments of the second day of the conference was the panel discussion titled “Corrosion Challenges, Sustainable Development, and the Circular Economy – Way Forward.” The session, moderated by Dr. Raghuvir Singh, Chief scientist, CSIR-NML, brought together experts from Industries and R&D Institutes. The four distinguished panellists, Dr. Sandip Ghosh Chowdhury, Director CSIR-NML, Shri Ujjal Chakraborti, Executive in-charge, TATA Tinplate, Dr. Ramanuj Narayan, Director, CSIR-IMMT, Bhubaneshwar, and Shri Praveen Thampi, Chief CRM Tata Steel Kalinganagar, shared their expert views on the above pertinent topic emphasizing the vital role of material scientist regarding the environmental issues, sustainability, and economic growth. A central takeaway from the session was the urgent need to integrate corrosion management strategies within the larger framework of sustainable development goals, urging R&D scientists and industries to think beyond the initial cost and consider long-term environmental impacts. The discussion also highlighted the need for a holistic approach in tackling material waste and optimizing resources, aligning with the global push towards more sustainable and circular business models.

The valedictory session was graced by Shri Ujjal Chakraborti, EiC , Tata Tinplate, the Chief Guest, and Dr. Ramanuj Narayan, Director CSIR-IMMT, the Guest of Honor. Also, Dr. Ashok Kumar, IIM Chairman, Dr. Raghuvir Singh, Chairman I3C, Dr. A N Bhagat, Tata Steel, along with other experts from Industries, Academia and R&D establishment. Both distinguished guests felicitated the students and winners of oral and poster presentations, recognizing their exceptional contributions and achievements throughout the conference. Further, the delegates and participants from various institutions reflected on the enriching experiences and valuable knowledge shared throughout the event.
