Student seminar on “Behind The Teacher’s Desk (BTTD-2025)”

Venue: NIT Jamshedpur campus

The Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) Jamshedpur Chapter, in collaboration with the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Jamshedpur, CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory (CSIR-NML), and Tata Steel Ltd., hosted the 14th edition of the nationally acclaimed student seminar Behind The Teacher’s Desk (BTTD-2025) from June 25 to 27, 2025, at the NIT Jamshedpur campus. The seminar was formally inaugurated by an esteemed panel of dignitaries including Chief Guest Dr. Sandip Ghosh Chowdhury, Director of CSIR-NML; Guest of Honours Dr. Gautam Sutradhar, Director, NIT Jamshedpur; Shri Chaitanya Bhanu, Vice President, Tata Steel Ltd; Dr. Atanu Ranjan Pal, Chairman, IIM Jamshedpur Chapter; Brig. (Retd.) Arun Ganguli, Secretary General, IIM; and Dr. Chiradeep Ghosh, Chairperson of BTTD-2025. The ceremonial release of the souvenir marked the official launch of the three-day academic congregation. BTTD has evolved into one of the most influential platforms for budding metallurgists since its inception in 2011. It brings together students, academia, R&D experts, and industry professionals under a single roof to exchange ideas, share innovations, and nurture a passion for metallurgy and materials science.

Key highlights:

  • In his opening remarks, Atanu Ranjan Pal welcomed attendees and emphasized the IIM Jamshedpur Chapter’s mission to popularize metallurgy among India’s youth.
  • (Retd.) Ganguli highlighted IIM’s meteoric rise in membership and outreach, while also advocating student engagement through fee waivers and institutional support.
  • Gautam Sutradhar called for bridging gaps between academia and industry and praised BTTD as a crucial convergence point. He urged students to leverage such opportunities for knowledge networking and interdisciplinary synergy.
  • Echoing this sentiment, Shri Chaitanya Bhanu highlighted the alarming trend of talent diversion from core engineering to non-technical careers, stressing the urgency to attract and retain young talent in metallurgical fields.
  • Chief Guest Dr. Sandip Ghosh Chowdhury traced the origin of BTTD and its symbolic significance—placing students “behind the teacher’s desk” as contributors of knowledge. He emphasized the role of materials in shaping a sustainable, high-performance future and aligned the seminar’s vision with national priorities such as Aatmanirbhar Bharat, the circular economy, and Viksit Bharat 2047.
  • The address of chief guest culminated in an invitation for BTTD participants to attend the prestigious CSIR–NML Platinum Jubilee Lecture by Shri T. V. Narendran, MD & Global CEO of Tata Steel
  • Around 150 student participants from 34 premier institutions—including IITs, NITs, CSIR labs, and leading universities—presented 78 technical papers across 15 parallel sessions under eight thematic areas
  • 19 students were honoured for Best Oral Presentations, and 6 winners of the Meta-Quiz competition received accolades
  • Program also featured interactive quizzes, expert talks, and industrial visits.

Keynote lectures were delivered by leading experts:

  • Vilas Thathavadkar, CTO, Hindalco Industries Ltd
  • (Dr.) Shiv Brat Singh, HoD-MME, IIT Kharagpur
  • Monojit Dutta, Head of Product Development Research Group, Tata Steel Ltd
  • Deeba Ahmad, Chief HRBP Corporate Functions, Tata Steel

Ms. Deeba Ahmad’s keynote particularly resonated with students, covering the spectrum of human resource dynamics, personal development, and emotional resilience.

  • During valedictory session on June 26, 2025, Chief Guest Ms. Swastika Basu, Managing Director, JAMIPOL, lauded the holistic format of the event.
  • The closing day, June 27, was dedicated to industrial exposure through site visits to Tata Steel Ltd, Tata Steel (Ghamaria), Tata Tinplate, JAMIPOL, and CSIR-NML, offering students a rare glimpse into real-world applications of metallurgical concepts

As the curtains fell on BTTD-2025, what remained was not just a memory of a seminar but the forging of a community—one where young metallurgists find direction, motivation, and a future shaped by knowledge, innovation, and collaboration.
